Slow Dawn Breathing

A gentle practice to begin the day with calm, inviting the body to wake at its own pace, like light arriving slowly through the cracks.

How to practice

  1. 1

Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes if you like and let your body find its support.

  2. 2

Breathe in through your nose counting to four, feeling the air enter fresh and light.

  3. 3

Pause briefly, without effort, simply noticing the silence between breathing in and breathing out.

  4. 4

Breathe out slowly through your mouth counting to six, as if blowing on a candle without putting it out.

  5. 5

Repeat this cycle for a few breaths, letting the exhale be a little longer than the inhale.

  6. 6

Gradually, return to your natural rhythm and notice how your body feels now.

When to use

Upon waking, before reaching for your phone, or on any morning that calls for a slower start.

Tip

If counting to six on the exhale feels difficult, just exhale to four. What matters is the gentleness, not the number.
