The Presence of the Body's Weight
An invitation to notice the body not for what it does, but for the simple fact of existing, supported. Wherever you are, there is a weight being held right now.
How to practice
- 1
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes if you like, or simply soften your gaze toward a point in front of you.
- 2
Notice where the body meets support: the feet on the floor, the back against the chair, the body on the mattress. Feel the weight being received by these surfaces.
- 3
Let your attention slowly descend through the legs, hips, torso, arms, and head, noticing each part as supported weight, not as effort.
- 4
If the mind wanders, gently return to the sensation of gravity pulling the body downward, without needing to fix anything.
- 5
Stay like this for a few moments, simply being held. When you're ready, open your eyes slowly and carry this sensation with you.
When to use
In moments of mental restlessness, before sleep, or when you feel you're carrying your body with unnecessary tension.
Tip
If you're standing, do the same practice for 1 minute, feeling your feet receive all of your weight.
