One-Minute Presence Pause

A full minute may seem short, but it is enough to step out of autopilot and notice where you are.

How to practice

  1. 1

Stop what you are doing and rest your hands in your lap or on the table.

  2. 2

Notice three sounds around you, one at a time.

  3. 3

Notice three sensations in your body, like your feet touching the floor.

  4. 4

Take one slow breath, and only then continue.

When to use

Between meetings, before eating, when switching activities, or before reaching for your phone out of habit.

Tip

The pause works best when you do not judge what you notice. Sounds and sensations are just points of contact with the present.
