Listening to the Spaces Between Sounds

A practice for noticing not only the sounds around you, but also the silence that exists between them. An invitation to dwell in the pauses of the soundscape.

How to practice

  1. 1

Find a comfortable position, sitting or lying down, and gently close your eyes. Bring your attention to your breath for a few moments, simply feeling the air as it flows in and out.

  2. 2

Gradually open your listening to the sounds closest to you: your breath, the hum of an appliance, the rustle of your clothing. Don't judge—just observe what arrives.

  3. 3

Now, expand your listening to more distant sounds: cars, conversations in the distance, birds, the wind. Notice how they appear and fade away.

  4. 4

Turn your attention to the intervals between sounds. Notice the small spaces of silence that exist between one sound and the next, however brief they may be.

  5. 5

Remain in this broad listening, welcoming sounds and silences as parts of the same fabric. If your mind wanders, gently return to the experience of hearing.

  6. 6

To close, bring your attention back to your breath, and when you feel ready, slowly open your eyes, carrying this sense of pause into the rest of your day.

When to use

Ideal for moments of mental agitation, before a difficult meeting, or when you need to slow down and find clarity amidst the noise.

Tip

Don't try to force silence. It is already present. Simply allow your attention to rest in the spaces that already exist between sounds.
