Listening to the Inner Sea
A practice to quiet the mind and perceive the sounds around you as waves that come and go, revealing the silence that exists between them.
How to practice
- 1
Find a comfortable position, sitting or lying down. Gently close your eyes and bring your attention to your natural breath, simply observing the air as it enters and leaves.
- 2
Gradually expand your listening to the nearest sounds: the hum of an appliance, the rustle of your clothes, your own breathing. Welcome each sound without judgment.
- 3
Now, expand your listening to more distant sounds: traffic, wind, a bird's song, a conversation in the distance. Notice how they arise and dissolve.
- 4
Listen to the space between sounds. Observe the silence that holds them, like the ocean floor that remains calm even as waves move on the surface.
- 5
Finally, bring your attention back to your breath. Feel your body as a whole, and slowly open your eyes, carrying this expanded listening into the rest of your day.
When to use
When you feel scattered or overwhelmed, during transitions between tasks, or when beginning a pause to reconnect with the present moment.
Tip
Don't try to force silence. It is not an emptiness, but the presence that welcomes all sounds. Simply observe.
