Listening to the Distant Echo

An invitation to notice the sounds that arrive from afar — the ones that almost go unnoticed beneath the closer noise. A simple practice of opening space for what announces itself from a distance.

How to practice

  1. 1

Sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes if you like and let your shoulders soften.

  2. 2

Begin by noticing the closest sounds: your breathing, the fabric of your clothes, some noise from your immediate surroundings.

  3. 3

Little by little, widen your listening as if opening an inner window. Let in the sounds that come from farther away — a car, a bird, a distant voice.

  4. 4

Don't chase any sound. Just notice how each one arrives, stays for a moment, and dissolves.

  5. 5

If your mind wanders, gently return to the wide listening, unhurried, like someone watching the sound horizon.

  6. 6

At the end, take one deep breath and notice how your body feels after this listening exercise.

When to use

In moments of too much nearby stimulation, when you want to widen your perception without effort.

Tip

If you're in total silence, listen to the most distant sound you can imagine — the echo also lives in memory.
