Listening to the Layers of Sound

A practice to perceive sound as a moving landscape, layer by layer, without judging or holding on. Welcome what reaches your ears as one receives a breeze.

How to practice

  1. 1

Find a comfortable position and close your eyes. Begin by noticing the closest sounds: your breath, the rustle of clothes, the pulse of the body.

  2. 2

Now, widen your listening to the sounds of your immediate environment: the hum of an appliance, footsteps, distant conversations. Simply observe, without naming or analyzing.

  3. 3

Let your attention expand even further, reaching distant sounds: traffic, wind, birds, the silence between them. Notice how each sound arises and dissolves.

  4. 4

Listen to the space between sounds — the emptiness that connects them. Rest in that interval, as one who hears the silence that holds the soundscape.

  5. 5

Gradually, bring back your awareness of nearby sounds and, finally, of your body. Open your eyes when it feels right.

When to use

Use when your mind feels restless, during moments of transition, or when you want to reconnect with your surroundings.

Tip

Don't force your hearing. If one sound dominates, simply let it be and gently return to noticing the other layers.
