Listening to the Trees
A practice to slow down your inner rhythm and connect with the serene presence of trees, listening to what they have to say through the wind, the leaves, and the silence.
How to practice
- 1
Find a place with a tree or a small grove. If that's not possible, close your eyes and visualize a tall, welcoming tree.
- 2
Begin by observing the tree from a distance. Notice its shape, its height, the texture of the trunk. Simply observe, without judging or analyzing.
- 3
Approach slowly. Place your hand on the trunk, feel its temperature, its texture. Sense the life pulsing there, even in silence.
- 4
Close your eyes and turn your attention to the sounds around the tree: the wind in the leaves, a bird's song, the creak of a branch. Simply listen, without naming or interpreting.
- 5
Now, listen to the silence that exists between those sounds. Notice how the silence is as present as the sound, and how it gives space for each noise to arise and disappear.
- 6
Stay for one more minute in silence, breathing in the rhythm of the tree. When you finish, thank it mentally for this silent exchange and carry that calm with you.
When to use
When you feel the need to slow down, seek clarity, or simply reconnect with nature and the present moment.
Tip
Choose a tree you see often and visit it at different times of day. Notice how the sounds and the feeling change with the light and the wind.
