Sinking into Soft Darkness
A practice for surrendering the weight of the day to the surface of the bed, allowing the body to find its own rhythm of rest. Like a leaf drifting slowly to the forest floor.
How to practice
- 1
Lie on your back, with your arms loose at your sides and your legs slightly apart. Feel the contact of your back with the mattress, as if the bed were a hammock holding you.
- 2
Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath, without trying to change it. Simply observe the air coming in and going out, like waves that arrive and recede on the sand.
- 3
Now, imagine that each part of your body touching the bed is gently dissolving, like sugar in warm water. Start with your feet, then your legs, hips, back, shoulders, arms, and head.
- 4
With each exhale, allow a little more of your body's weight to be given over to the surface. Feel gravity working in your favor, drawing you into a state of stillness.
- 5
Bring your attention to the sounds around you, without judging them. Let them become part of the environment, like sonic textures that require no response. If your mind wanders, gently invite it back to the contact of your body with the bed.
- 6
Remain in this surrender for a few minutes, simply existing in the soft darkness of the moment. When you feel it is time, move slowly into the position you usually sleep in.
When to use
Use when lying down, when the body is tired but the mind still tries to solve the day. Ideal for the transition between wakefulness and sleep.
Tip
If you notice you are trying hard to relax, remember: you don't need to do anything. Just allow your body to do what it already knows.
