Creativity as Presence

Creativity as an invitation to the present

When we think of creativity, we often imagine artists in studios, musicians on stages, or writers facing blank pages. But creativity is much more than that: it is a fundamental human capacity to transform, to combine, to bring something new into the world from what already exists. And, when practiced with attention, it becomes a powerful invitation to presence.

The flow state and the now

Have you ever noticed how, when drawing, cooking, writing, or even carefully organizing a drawer, time seems to change? Minutes stretch out, the noise of the world fades, and there is a feeling of being completely absorbed in what you are doing. This state, called flow by psychologists, is a state of mindfulness naturally induced by creative action. We are not thinking about the past or longing for the future; we are immersed in the action, in the movement of our hands, in the choice of colors, in the flavor we are adjusting.

This state does not require hours of training or special talent. It is enough to choose an activity that allows us to create something — even something simple — and do it with full attention. The key is not to judge the outcome, but to value the process. When we stop worrying about how good or beautiful something will turn out, we make room for the pure experience of doing.

Creativity as connection

Creating also connects us. When we cook a meal for someone, we are translating care into flavor and aroma. When we write a letter, we are putting on paper thoughts we might not say out loud. When we garden, we are collaborating with the earth so that something can grow. In these acts, we build bridges between our inner world and the outer world, between ourselves and others.

And it does not need to be grand. A doodle in a notebook, an improvised melody on the guitar, a dish seasoned with intention — all of these are acts of creation that remind us that we are active agents in our reality, not just passive consumers.

A gentle invitation

You do not need to be an artist to benefit from creativity as presence. Simply choose one small creative act to do today, without hurry, without expectation. It could be:

  • Doodling in a notebook while waiting for the bus.
  • Trying a new spice in tonight's dinner.
  • Taking a photo with your phone just because of the light or shadow that caught your attention.
  • Organizing a drawer by color or shape, just for the pleasure of doing it.

Do it slowly. Notice how your hands move, how your thoughts calm down, how your breath adjusts. When you finish, pause for a moment and observe what remains. Not to judge, but to notice.

Creativity, when lived this way, is not about producing something to show others. It is about being here, now, with your hands in the work, with your mind in the making, with your heart open to what arises. In this simple space, we find a presence that does not depend on absolute silence or free hours — only on the willingness to play, to experiment, to be with what is in our hands.

So why not turn the next ordinary moment into a small act of creation? Not for product, but for presence.
